April 2002
We started the evening with an early dinner, then returned to Diversey to watch videos. The videos were fun, but they almost spelled disaster for Second Saturday. When the videos ended, everyone slunk lazily in the couch, trying to avoid any additional activity that night. But after an inspirational speech by Janelle (“We have to go!”), our spirits were renewed, and we hopped in the cabs.
Svati's poor financial planning left her with only 1 dollar in her pocket, so we circled the neighborhood in search of an ATM. Although we were in the heart of Wicker Park, we could not find an ATM, so we returned to the club where Tom volunteered to cover Svati's cover.
Finally inside, we discovered Emily and John hunched over their drinks, trying to escape our attention. Soon we were crowded around their table, bumping knees and elbows.
The Neil Diamond band was great fun. The impersonation was perfectly cheesy, and the tunes inspired some of us to bounce around below the stage. Regardless, we tired quickly and left before the band finished.
March 2002
Despite the frigid weather, we had a nice group assembled for our first trip. When we got to Cherry Red, they told us to pay 20 dollars for admission to the leukemia benefit until 11pm. It was already 10pm, so we decided to head over to Lawry's to wait it out. Once we started gossiping at Law's, we had so much fun that we stayed until 1:30am.
We never made it to CR that night, but a few of us went back a week later for the UR VIP party. The front room was crowded; the back room was empty; and the music was decent. The vibe was overall comfortable, but our energy levels kind of fizzled (it was a Friday). I expect we'll return someday and have a great time.
