I am continually amazed by the sweetness of life. And delighted by the complexity of human interaction.
Have you ever found your life intertwined with someone else’s life, and thought “For better or worse, the two of us have been put together”? I’m not talking about true love, destiny, or any of that baloney. Just the feeling that the two of you share a connection that is unmistakable, yet dared not be spoken about for fear of spoiling it.
A person who has seen you at your best. And seen you at your worst. A person you have loved, hated, pursued, ignored. Fought with. Screamed at. Kissed. A person who seemed gone forever, but couldn’t bear to be strangers. Who can always tell when you’re lying. Sometimes she confronts you on it; sometimes she laughs quietly to herself. The two of you can never keep secrets, because even if you tried, the other person would still know somehow. Words are not required. You can walk together in silence. There is an understanding. A glance, a smile conveys entire paragraphs of meaning. You can communicate when nobody else notices.
Considering your past, perhaps the two of you should not be such good friends today. It’s weird. Couples break-up and go their separate ways—they don’t become best friends.
But some people can’t help it. They’re connected.
