Our Response to The Daily
People seem to be paying attention to what we’re trying to do here at ASGossip—we’ve had some serious hits over the past two days, and we’ve also been covered in an article in The Daily Northwestern. The coverage is in a speculative piece that explains what we’re doing and attempts to ferret out exactly who’s behind the site. We have only a few comments:
1) Yes, satire and humor are part of what we do, but they’re pieces in an overall approach and philosophy on ASG and the campaigns. We’ve run some humorous bits, and our articles feature the occasional one-liner. But there’s also some serious commentary and interesting insights in our reports on events and in our contributions from correspondents. We urge people not to pigeonhole us into a “satire” or “humor” vein—sure, we love to crack jokes and we don’t want to take things too seriously, but we also want to discuss the issues, the candidates, and the campaign. It’s a multifaceted approach.
2) Has Matt Springer written for us? Yes. Will he in the future? Yes. But we’ve decided that if Springer writes pieces for us in the future, he will no longer be allowed to do so under the guise of anonymity. He seemed to want to get into the spirit of things, and so when we asked him to cover the presidential debates on Sunday night, it was under the condition that it be anonymous coverage. But since his name has been uncovered by The Daily in connection with the site and he’s admitted to authoring some of the writing, he’s no longer an anonymous figure. Since Springer seems a bit attention-starved in general, he probably won’t mind writing for us under his own name.
P.S. Ariel—if you want to take down a “computer geek,” consider taking down Springer. He should be at the debates on Thursday, and you’re welcome to him. :)
