Random Thoughts on Signage
Some rather random thoughts on the debut of the campaign sign slipped into our inbox from a woman we’ll call Ms. Green. The insights are valuable, but if future missives could be a bit more focused around a topic, we’d really appreciate it. Thanks to Ms. Green for the note, though!
I prefer to remain anonymous. I’m just mailing from a campus lab. Thanks for this service though.
Signs are being put up at a healthy pace this first night of ASG elections. A lot of candidates, as usual, are having friends and friends of friends put up their “nonverbal communication”. Still, in comparison with recent years there is a decided lack of volume. Why are there huge areas left open? In a survey of south campus dorms, even the most visible areas were left partially bare. A large number of the signs I’ve seen are also from only some of the people running. My explanation: this will definitely be a lower-key race. Sit back and relax.
I enjoy sort of rating the signs to myself. I was glad to see the “Fro” back (Kramer looks very good), and both the Academic Vice Pres. people have informative, easy-to-read signs. The incredibly densely written signs of years past *so far* are not proliferating, nor are obscure ones that don’t really address the issues (Fro notwithstanding, although I’m sure he’s got informative ones too). A few signs are just not really full of enough information; Karyn Bass’ sign with just three tiny phrases at the bottom when we want more, and Kim Montgomery’s call to no slogans has one anyway for the meat. I guess I should talk about the other two pres. people, since I did three already; Oberhauser has it good but with a little hard to read font for the “Breath…” thing; plus, doesn’t he usually wear glasses? And I haven’t yet seen a sign for Roxanne or anyone else. Okay there was one tiny Evil Dave poster—very dissapointing compared to other years. Where’s the deer, the Lake People, the fun and games (I do like Degeneration X)?
It’s too late to get to my usual late night hang out at Norris, but I bet it’s good, while again not too dense. Hey, it’s just the beginning of the quarter—why study when you can see the signs of spring all around you!
I really hope I will see some more signs, especially from Exec. and SS veeps. Is there only one candidate each or something? I saw Leniton and Moore, respectively. Moore has signs similar to the good AVP ones, but Leniton’s are a little reminiscent of recycling signs, especially when placed near the actual bins in the dorms. Not bad, but just too similar to be noticeable like they should be.
