Daily “Endorses” Ariel Friedler
Our untrained eyes count 2 sizable articles in yesterday’s Daily Northwestern devoted to Ariel Friedler, candidate for ASG president. Four photos of the candidate run along with these articles. One story features a blown-up quote running at the bottom: “I don’t consider myself paranoid and I don’t think ASG is out to get us. I think they’re out to do nothing.” Jeremy Mullman’s brief editorial on page 3 of the Focus section attempts not to skew the reader’s opinions, but portions of it could be lifted verbatim for a Friedler endorsement editorial.
Mullman claims that Friedler’s drastic platform has earned him the distinction of making “news.” To us, it seems as though the only “news” in the two articles is the Daily’s implicit endorsement of a single candidate through enhanced coverage. Were both articles necessary? Certainly not. Other candidates will get only one reporter, one article, one chance to convey themselves to the campus through the power of print. It would seem to us that what’s good for the geese should be good for the Friedler.
