Ms. Chastity on Gurkoff/Bass and Election Commissioners

Miss Chastity is an ASG insider with a bone to pick: she’s disgusted by the abuse of power displayed by Gene Gurkoff in his support of Karyn Bass for president, and she’s disgusted by the election judges’ decision to allow such support. Preach it, sister!

To whom it may concern,

One of the most embarrassing displays of unethical behavior in these elections has been the conduct of Gene Gurkoff in his support of Karyn Bass’ campaign. I do not condemn him for being a Bass supporter—what I find distasteful is his attempt to flaunt and abuse the power (limited as it appears to be) that comes with the title “election commisioner.”

Aside from the debacles Gurkoff has had with staffers on certain campaigns, he has also potentially skewed the perspective of his fellow students. So few students care and/or are interested in these elections that when they see someone like Gurkoff, with the assuming title of “commisioner” they jump to the conclusion that he has the inside “scoop,” or that he can assist them in making informed decisions. In reality, the only thing Gurkoff has done is bias these elections. The only information he has provided are the platforms of those who HE HAPPENS TO WANT TO WIN. Not only is this unfair to the other candidates, but it is also unfair to all those students who may get their information from Gurkoff. So, in light of the situation, I say:

To Gurkoff: it’s time to start acting responsibly.

To the the Election Judges who ruled that it is acceptable for election commisioners to endorse candidates: why don’t you just throw the elections in favor of the person who happens to be your best friend? ;)

To Senators: I would encourage you to provide interested constituents with access to information, rather than to your personal opinions. You are, of course, allowed to give opinions, but you should ENCOURAGE voters to decide for themselves. And to the other Election Commisioners: Please, just stay the hell out of Dodge!
